I'll Stand By You: Who Performed It Better? Pia Toscano or Angie Miller?

Last night, Angie Miller took on “I’ll Stand By You” as one of her Idol performances. As we all know, it was that very song that introduced Pia Toscano to the world, and her performance has been touted as one of the all time greatest Idol moments in the history of the show.

From Rickey.org:

“Not better than any version of Pia Toscano!”

From Idolhead Ed:

All I can think of is Pia Toscano singing this and setting the place on fire.”

From My Own Personal Opinion:

“She (Angie) almost won round one with her I’ll Stand By You performance, but really, Pia Toscano did it better.”

From Satyr Review:

Angie: I love her. She looked downright gorgeous tonight. However, she sang The Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You." That song should never be touched again after Pia Toscano sang it perfectly on Idol a few years back.”

So- what do YOU think? Weigh in with your opinion!!

Not many singers out there with the vocal heft AND range of Pia Toscano.  (Technically, I think she would be classified as a heavy mezzo soprano.)  Coupled that with impessive breath capacity and control, and an instinct for a dramatic melodic arrangement building to a cathartic crescendo and you have witnessed a powerful, classic, soul moving performance.

Angie's vocals are all pop to me.  Her voice is clear throughout her range but lacks a rich texture.  Her ISBY was delivered with conviction, her arrangement not overly embellished.  I enjoyed this performance of an iconic anthem but was not moved.

Pia's classical vocal training is apparent when listening to her natural vibrato on the big, high notes as well as throughout most of the melody.  Angie does not develope that. so her voice, although having a pretty, sweet and smooth tone, does not resonate nearly as well as Pia's.  Especially on big, dramatic melodies, WE need an artist capable of producing big, transcending vocals.  IMO, Janelle Arthur also did this with her rendition of "You Keep Me Hanging On".  Quite the conversion from Motown soul to POWER ballad!
