In Conversation With Pia Toscano

My special guest 'In Conversation' today is the amazing singer from Howard Beach, New York, whose dramatic elimination from Season 10 of 'American Idol' both visibly shocked and upset the three judges, Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, as well as millions of TV viewers. Pia Toscano was a show front-runner at the time. So when did she begin singing and what has she been doing since the show? It's time to ask her. So, it's a warm welcome to my first guest of 2014, Pia Toscano.
You were born in New York and raised in Howard Beach. What were you like as a young child?

"I was very rambunctious as a child. I always wanted to put on a show and make people smile. They called me the kissing bandit as a kid, because I would kiss everyone hello when I met them."

Are you from a musical family?

"Yes, I am from a musical family. My dad was in a band growing up. He sings and plays guitar. My sister is also the Principal Timpanist of the Tuscon Symphony."

You started singing at the age of four in talent shows. Can you remember any of the songs you sang?

"The first talent show I performed in, I sang Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". I froze when I looked out into the crowd and started crying. Ha."

At the age of nine you appeared in a local church production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. What part did you play?

"I didn't have a big part in 'Jesus Christ Superstar', I was just in the ensemble, but it gave me a taste of my love of theater."

In middle school you were the official National Anthem singer. How were you chosen?

"I was chosen to sing the National Anthem because my band teacher caught me singing it in a rehearsal room while I was supposed to be practicing for my flute test. He came into the room and asked if that was me singing. When I told him that it was me, he made me start every assembly with the Star Spangled Banner."
